HOW TO CHOOSE A PFD
Text & Photographs By Philip Tulin

The Jackson/Teton area birding terrain is comprised of riparian, lakes, ponds and nearby marshes,
sageflats and grasslands, forested foothills and moraines, mountain slopes, sub-alpine and town & settlement areas. Summers are VERY crowded. Mid-September is best.

Always wear your PFD for kayaking, canoeing, etc. During an emergency, you WILL NOT be able to put your
PFD on in the water. The failure to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) will potentially lead to a dangerous situation.

Okay, I'll admit that the title of this article appears to be an oxymoron. By definition, a "volunteer"
isn't normally paid for his or her work, but in some cases there can be other compensation that makes donating your time and skills worthwhile. This can be especially true if you have flexibility in your schedule and would like to spend some time at a site in America's national park system.

This is a quick and easy technique that you can have a lot of fun with while trying it on various photos.
Sometimes photo of flowers can be a little dark and could use a little brightening to make them pop. Such was the case with this photo of roses that was captured where they sat just inside the open door of a market.

One thing that always intrigues newcomers to nature photography (and experienced practitioners as well)
is why some people seemingly possess the magical ability to find rare plants and animals again and
again. I, too, have of cause wondered how this could be. But after some years of hunting specifically for rare insects, I now begin to see that those people are not just extraordinarily lucky individuals.

Slot canyons have their draw on me. I do not understand all of the reasons why, but they tend to be a
place of their own, completely unlike the feeling you get when only a few feet away in the desert. They are compelling in their own way. After we struck camp up on Egypt bench, we drove south to a spot where we would hike into two well known slots for the fun of it as our recent few days had been full of hard hiking...

REASONS TO USE RAW FILES

Depending of where you will be snowshoeing, how long you will be snowshoeing, how far you will be
snowshoeing and what conditions you will be snowshoeing, you always run the risk of being in a dangerous situation. Cold weather as well as snow storms could make your easy hike turn into a situation that needed warmth.

RAW being a crutch seems to be a common misconception. The first task other than composition and light is
a good exposure no matter what kind of file you shoot. There are many reasons to use a RAW file format and here are a few of them. With RAW you can make your own tonal curves and do it after the shot, choosing the right finesse for a particular image.
